Tai Chi And Health

Tai chi is based on the idea of an energy, called qi (pronounced “chi”), that runs through our bodies along energy lines or channels called meridians. The concept of qi, or life force, is critical to the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TMC). If it moves properly, we’ll be healthy and balanced. In the event the flow of the energy along the meridians is blocked or interrupted, or if the qi is weak, we can get ill in the body or in the mind.

Stirring the qi through our bodies and along the meridians is one of the endeavors of practicing Tai Chi. Another Chinese method of movement, qigong, uses the same idea of slow movement that is combined with slow breathing and meditation, and focusing on the present moment. It is believed that seeing that blockages in the energy flow can cause illness, unblocking those blockages and stimulating the flowing of qi in the body can mend and also prevent illness as well as keep us healthy and happy.

Another practice in Chinese medicine, acupuncture, uses needles to take out blocks and help the qi move through the body. Western medical experts are sometimes suspicious of the notion of energies and meridians, but the health benefits can also be explained in Western medical terms.

For example, these ancient practices focus on the correct alignment of the spine and good posture, and this can help with back pain or tension in the neck and shoulder area. Learning to move slowly and following the flow of your own breathing is a good tactic to calm down and release stress in the body and the mind. The movements can also help the joints to move more easily and will increase flexibility.

If safety in an exercise program is a concern, Tai Chi is the exercise for you.. Because the routines are done slowly, there is no risk of injuring yourself even if you are not fit or flexible at first. Tai chi and qi gong are suited to everybody, young or old, fit or not fit, and anyone can benefit from consistent practice.
